Welcome to the new message board for the Ontario Prospectors Association. Feel free to make posts in any board and discuss with other prospectors across the province and the country. You will need to register a user name before you can post but this is FREE and takes only 1 minute to do. Cheers! Hi Geoff , I'm new here. I see this was posted WAY BACK in 2007.... I guess you may not be admin still ?? I'm just looking for somebody to direct me. I am retired and looking for a hobby and thought PANNING would be fun ?? Where would be the best place to get more info. thank you kopperkid ( Chris)

Hi , I'm actually looking at buying 190 acres that is for sale for 80k that has been drilled and the results were .809 ounces per ton... I think that is good but not sure. There is two creeks on the property as well. If I buy it I will probably just do it as a hobby. The property has 6 patent gold mining claims which are perpetual forever to who owns the land, that come with the sale and the drilling results. Owned by an old guy who had the property willed to him a ways back by his parents who had it willed to them from grandparents way back in late 1890's Property was test drilled in 1991 by large gold mining company who wanted to purchase it after the results came in. The parents who had it then didn't sell it , they though it was worth more than offered. So they passed away and son now in 70's just wants to sell it. Has no interest in it and has lived in Toronto most of his life. His grandfather went to the property in 1924 with just a pick, shovel and a mule and came away with 40 ounces. He went again in 1928 and came out with another 40 ounces. Apparently he was beaten and robbed and never went back again. Property has not been touched since. I'm thinking of getting a backhoe and small scale sluce system or build one and doink around as a hobby. What I want to know does anyone know what licenses and red tape crap I'd have to go through to do it as a hobby?

Hello everyone, New member here. Ive been interested in prospecting for a while now. My family may be moving north so I have decided to give it a shot down here in the western GTA to start.
I've currently made my own small hand tools and a mini sluice box. Depending on what I find this weekend I will be building a impact mill and trying to process a few small rocks to see if it works.
I would be moving way up north, 3 hours west of Thunder Bay and have family about 10 km from the New, New Gold mine in Rainy River.

Prospecting seems like a lonely activity. I'm just getting started and by the post dates in this forum i'm not sure It will be of much use to me. I was hoping it would be a literal ground breaker into prospecting and mining. If anyone want and real information get in touch with th M.N.D.R. After all they hold the claim on mining. I will though give it a shot. My pappy always said dont put all yer gold in one pocket. Cheers all and hope to find some good discussion on the way of the prospector.

Hello everyone. It certainly does appear to be a lonely life being a prospector, but don't get discouraged. All the fresh air and exercise is yours free for the taking. I have been prospecting for a long time and I find that it is best to do all your preliminary search for locations in the MNDM databases first. The regional geologist offices have a wealth of information available to anyone who asks. ogsearth is the best way I found to compile all that is needed to identify a prospect before I spend any time or money to go look at the property. Another good avenue is a gem and mineral club in your area, they usually are familiar with all the collectng sites. I am a member of the Bancroft Gem and Mineral club.

I'm new here and from Minnesota. Looking to do some prospecting in Ontario, the gold here in Minnesota is puny! Does anyone use sluices or highbankers and are they legal in Ontario? I would sure love to know.

Hello Dennis.
it seems that no one replies to posts here. There is absolutely no sluicing allowed in Ontario. Only panning is allowed. You still need to be careful not to alter any water way no matter how small. ministry of natural resources are quite strict about this and will issue fines and may impose fees to repair water ways.
A prospectors license is not needed to pan. your good to go on crown land, but if there is a mining claim or any disposition on the property permission is required from those rights owners. Properties with alienations are off limits until you speak to a map tech with the ministry of northern development and mines to determine the nature of the alienation.
