www.mindat.org/…ardson+Gold+Mine,+ElDorado,+Ontario
A few isolated discoveries lie outside these areas, and it may be that future finds will connect the three gold regions into a single one, including the whole Archaean portion of Ontario.
Unlike most gold regions, Ontario has no placer deposits, as a consequence from the effects of ice of intense glacial action which has swept away all gold bearing sands and gravels and so mixed them with barren materials in the immense beds of drift found in the southern portions of the region as to make placer mining hopeless. It is said that colors of gold may be washed from the sands of Toronto island, and probably traces of placer gold could be obtained at many other points by perseverance in panning, but nowhere in paying quantities. In this respect Ontario resembles Nova Scotia and differs from Quebec with its Chaudiere placers, and still more from British Columbia.
… Vennor refers to the occurrence of gold in the wonderfully rich cavity of the Richardson mine in Madoc, where the first gold was discovered in Ontario. The gold was here found in a " reddish brown ferruginous earth in which were scattered fragments of a black carbonaceous matter, the latter showing when broken small flakes and scales of the metal. Specimens of free gold from Marmora, in the School of Science collection, are associated with a somewhat weathered siderite. Probably some of the rusty quartz with free gold from this and other parts of the province results from the decay of siderite or other carbonates rich in iron rather than from the weathering of sulphides.
Hopefully some of you enjoyed this bit of history. For me the story was simply amazing. The ramifications of both the California gold discovery at Sutters Mill and the Richardson mine require you to investigate farther.

You were going to look around Sudbury. More to the north is Lake of the woods area just south of Kenora. Some places around their that look good are Chelmsford, Levak, Onaping and Dowling Oh! Porcupine is up their too. Lots of unwalked creeks and streams. If you have your prospector licence you can pan crown land, looks like lots of that in area. where do you get your minning goods from Pans, sluice box ect. I have to buy off the net. or go to Bass Pro in VON. ARE we the only ones prospecting. ITS a new hobby to me

When your up their, around the old mines. Check the culverts that cross under the roads for materials to pan. Run off will be high and the ditches will flow heavy with sands from the hills. I'm based close to Markham. Have family in Huntsville that's likely as fare as I will get this year. But prospecting is a very healthy hobby. As walking is one of the best exercises. So smapling and panning should be good. My doctor would like a vial of gold for her fire place mantle. So for me! bonus if I find some gold. I might go out this weekend and get some creek bed dirt to pan at home. Some open water just out side of Huntsville where I'm looking to pan this summer. Can put waders on and get some until my feet get to cold. Thinking of making hole so when spring flooding comes theirs a place for any gold to fall. {First place to look next time I go back up.} I picked up a Bazooka Gold Trap minis works very well. If my health gets better I think I will buy the next size up of the Bazooka (I think its called the prospector) because it is less work moving material.

My friend Rob's mom and dad live in Sunridge. Could be an other spot to pan. A high banker would be the cats (a**) butt. Getting up early to go north. Let you know how it goes. Will try to pan it out Sun. Saturday is suppose to be warmer.

Well half a pail of cons. Not a flake that you can see with the human eye. was good to get out, cold feet after about 2 hours. small Bazooka gold trap worked very good once it was set up. (WANTED TO FLOAT AWY) Was a little hard going with the water frozen to the bottom in some places. You could flip ice and 4 inches of river bottom at the same time. Look forward to the summer up their.
